What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. It is caused by bacteria in plaque, which can lead to gum inflammation and, if untreated, tooth loss.
Stages of Gum Disease
- Gingivitis – Early stage with red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Reversible with proper care.
- Periodontitis – More advanced stage where gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that can become infected.
- Advanced Periodontitis – Severe damage to the gums and bone, leading to loose teeth or tooth loss.
Signs & Symptoms
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Gum recession (gums pulling away from teeth)
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Pain when chewing
Causes & Risk Factors
- Poor oral hygiene
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Diabetes
- Genetic predisposition
- Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause)
- Certain medications
Prevention & Treatment
- Daily Oral Care – Brush twice a day with an electric tooth brush, use interdental icon brushes daily that are well fitting. The hygienist will help you adapt your hygiene technique so that your plaque levels are as low as possible. A high standard of oral hygiene is critical before any planned gum treatment is carried out
- Regular Dental Visits – Professional cleanings and check-ups to detect early signs.
- Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing) – Removes plaque and tartar beneath the gumline. We would assess your gums with gum measurements and then carry out deep cleaning under the gum with local anaesthetic over several appointments. This will then be reviewed after 3-4 months of healing to review and reassess the gum measurements.
- Surgical Treatments – In severe cases, gum grafts or bone regeneration may be needed where deep cleaning has not resolved the pocketing around the teeth.
Why Treatment Matters
Untreated periodontal disease can lead to severe health issues, including heart disease, diabetes complications, and respiratory problems. Taking action early can save your smile and protect your overall health. Untreated gum disease will lead to teeth drifting, becoming loose and tooth loss. This accelerates the loss of other teeth and loss of facial form and shape. Patients who have gum disease are often only suitable for dentures as replacements for missing teeth
